Dear Evansdale Families,
My name is April McCarthy, and I am so excited to have been selected as your new principal at Evansdale Elementary! I cannot wait to meet you all, get to know your families, and support you in making Evansdale the best school it can be!
I have been working in education for eighteen years, fifteen of which have been in DeKalb. I came to Atlanta from Gainesville, FL with my family in 2005 and began working at Coralwood School and Diagnostic Center. I worked as a special education teacher here for 10 years before moving to Briar Vista Elementary School as the assistant principal. Briar Vista has a very diverse population, including a Montessori School Choice program, and I very much enjoyed working with teachers, parents, and community partners to serve both the traditional and Montessori populations equitably. For the past year, I have been serving as assistant principal at Pleasantdale Elementary while we prepared for a big move to a new building! It's been an exciting journey!
As we embark on this journey together, please know that I was absolutely thrilled to apply, interview, and ultimately be selected to serve your community. As a special education teacher, it was my job to listen, advocate, and support my students' families as they made decisions about their child's education. As an assistant principal, that job expanded to include teachers, parents, and students schoolwide; what didn't change was my belief that communication is critical to the success and happiness of students, their families, and the school community.
I'm eager to get started and serve the Evansdale community! Please, always let me know how I can support you and your family.
Very truly yours,
